the "face" matters most, unfortunately. Especially among the new rich... They are in the process of building statues for their glories (which indeed amazing), financed by the insatiable consumerism appetite in America. cen@jkt

Capital City

 By: flamenco : September 15th, 2014-20:06
Beijing. Mega Malls, Mega Brands ... The Fashion & Luxury Houses, as are the Watch Brands are all here in full force with flagship stores. Someone must be buying !

How bizarre.

I understand there are several ghost towns outside of Beijing. JerryW

As you probably know ..

Beijing is a crowded place , as is most cities in China. There are several ultra high end malls in Beijing , mostly quiet .. But I guess quiet = exclusivity ;)

How Bizarre??

Right smack in the center of Beijing. As the chinese idiom goes .... Out with the old , In with the new This is the new face of Beijing !

Strange...

Strange, I would imagine if it were in Beijing, these locales would have more people. Who knew that even Beijing was overbuilt. I knew that secondary cities and the suburbs were overbuilt, but I never imagined that within the most major cities would have ...

Since I've never been there, I don't know what to make of it, but even in NYC,

there are places that are ghost towns on the weekends. The wall street/financial district can be very quiet on Saturdays and Sundays. It's a commercial space, and no signs of life there on the weekends. If you leave NYC, you see this ghost town phenomenon...

That's true...

You're absolutely right. Ghost neighborhood.

A truly sublime experience in NYC is Manhattan very early (like 8am) Sunday

morning. Especially on a sunny summer day. It's dead quiet then, and you really feel like you own the city. And if you go driving through this, it feels like magic, the lack of traffic and noise.

Hmm, I'm still asleep...

I'm usually still asleep... But in my dreams I imagine it to be a bit like this (without the people dressed in work attire)...
