DIY PROJECT:- Nikon 14 - 24 f2.8
Nov 22, 2013,20:00 PM
The Nikon 14 - 24 is a famed lens. Sharp, contrasty, and wonderful colours. In fact its so good that Canon users go through the trouble of a lens adaptor to use the lens on their body.
However, as with all things in life .... there is a catch. The front element of the lens does not accept filters (no protection, yikes!) And thus, unable to accommodate any types of other filters e.g.. GND, ND & Polarizers

In the past 2 yrs or so, Photodiox and Lee Filters have come up with solutions to cater to landscape photographers , albeit at a PRICE !

Have an existing set Cokin Pro-Z series, however the filter holder did not fit the 14-24. What a waste !
As u can see the screws that held the Cokin Filter holder was not the most confidence inspiring and very fiddly !
Additionally, the gap btw the holder and lens hood meant light leaks ......... less than ideal

Something had to be DONE ! Thus, in the spirit of PuristS .... adversity brought the ingenuity, albeit somewhat forced !
Choice of materials
Measure thrice ... cut once !!!
M&Ms optional, of course !
That is just run of the mill PVC pipe cut down to length
Not so hot in white ! Gotta be colour coordinated !
The finished product ... after 9 mtgs of trial & error .... ok ok I wasn't very conscientiously working on it during that time
Finally, did a load bearing test. i.e. Fully loaded the filer with 1 x ND + 1 x GND + 1 x CPL
Tilted the lens downwards, as far as the tripod would allow, to ensure nothing falls off during an outdoor shoot in not so desirable terrain !
Left the setup overnight ...... Passed with flying colours
So now .... am off to shot ! And will be back with some photos ... soon !
