Really Right Stuff
BH-40 Ballhead with B2-40-LR Compact Lever-Release Clamp

The BH-40 recently underwent a slight re-design. The images at the left reflect the new design. Here's what's changed:

  • Weight reduced from 13.0z to 11.9 oz (336g) (an 8.5% reduction).
  • Main lock knob raised and slightly shortened so it now clears any platform diameter (previously limited to 2.7” platforms)
  • Main lock knob has 26 available positions (up from 6)
  • Main lock mechanism is more robust and durable
  • Up to 45% stronger lockup – new load capacity is still 18lbs but lockup will be easier to achieve. This means that more force can get you more than 18lbs, but we still only recommend 70-200mm and occasional 300mm lens limits.
  • Drop notches have been reduced from 2 to 1, to improve the lockup stability and smoothness of the ball joint. The single notch is now centered at the “front” when in the usual ballhead position.
  • New laser-engraved indicators for both lock knobs to show which direction is which, tighten or loosen.
  • Drag set knob has an arrow indicator showing more drag or less.

BH-40 features:
  • 40mm diameter ball is hollow in the center to reduce weight.
  • Single 90-degree drop notch for extreme angle shooting, or achieving portrait orientation without an L-plate.
  • Knobs are captive and uniquely shaped, making operation "by feel" very intuitive.
  • Main locking lever is spring-loaded; pull out and turn to one of 26 positions to avoid interference with the clamp, camera, etc.
  • As of March 2014 the knob has been raised and slightly shortened, meaning it now clears any size tripod platform without repositioning.
  • Drag set control allows repeatable ball tension settings. Set desired drag with the Main Lock Knob, then tighten the drag set knob to keep ballhead at that tension.
  • Exclusive drum & symmetrical progressive band brake securely locks panning base.
  • Panning base is laser-engraved at 2.5 degrees intervals.
  • All components are either anodized aluminum or stainless steel for years of corrosion-free performance.

Comes packed in its own padded Cordura protective draw-string pouch. Use the pouch to cover and protect the ballhead when mounted to the tripod, for carrying the ballhead in your carry-on luggage when traveling, or when the ballhead & tripod are strapped to a photo backpack.

I'll be getting a 3-Legged Thing tripod soon with their own ballhead. Obviously not as good as Really Right Stuff, but I will see how it is.

Lot of good gear...

There's a lot of good tripods out there and it's always nice to have options. Have you nailed down your choices for a tripod? -MW

its a superb robust piece of kit albeit a bit heavy and tall when collapsed, but along with a ballhead it has a unique feature ive never seen before. the centre column comes out and can then be put back in horizontally or at angles. perfect for overhead p...

that would be great!

It's always good to hear about experiences with different brands and products. The ability to place the center column sounds like a great feature, look forward in your post about the Vangaurd! -MW

Great Stuff

I bought my wife a RRS tripod and ball head for Christmas this year. She loves them!

That's a awesome gift!

Agree, they make great stuff! Which RRS tripod and ballhead did you get her? Do you use it when you shoot? -MW

She bought a Lumix GH-3 last year and her ancient Bogen was not a good match. She loves it. I have only played with it, she is a much better photographer than I am.

Nice!

The Lumix takes great pictures! It's amazing how light the RRS tripod are but they are so sturdy. You should give yourself more credit, your Big Sur shot came out nice as do your VC and Panerai ones! -MW

Strong, sturdy and precise
