Seafood, Limestone Islands and a Toddler

Jul 25, 2014,22:38 PM

I had my first real vacation this year last month. Although a simple short 3-day, 2-night away from work, this trip is a first on many levels. It is the first time I have been to the southern Thai province of Krabi and also the first flights of my nephew. We managed to get him on a plane just two weeks before he turned two. Somebody flew infant rate!

Even the airline I flew agreed with my choice of watch.

The only moment my nephew cried was when we stopped him from moving about before the landing.

A little over an hour, we were already where we wanted to be.

But we didn't ask for waves this strong! This was the low season all right. But the currents were especially strong.

Best was for us to enjoy lunch first...

...and to observe the signs. This beach we made the first stop at was hit hard by the tsunami in 2004.

Time to check in

Resort at low tide

The Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Chronograph had a good time obviously.

Father and son moments...

...while mother and aunty enjoyed the spa treatment

Dinner was served.

Poor weather continued the following morning.

The original plan for this second day of the trip was to visit those islands seen in the distance.

Not being able to do that, I turned to some idle photography...

...dipped in the pool...

...and brought out the kayak.

In the afternoon, weather cleared up enough for us to visit a nearer destination to sightsee.

This was behind the area's largest resort so I guessed it was the resort who put up such stylized signs and in English.

After a short walk around the back of that resort, we came up to a renowned cave with shrine and mythical story about how the cave and the small islands around there came to be.

I wish I had the skills to climb.

The boatman said he could not bring his boat out quickly enough. The tide receded so quickly. It was waist-deep to knee-deep right around here when we arrived.

I tried to wade through the mud, only to find that weighing close to 100 kilos didn't make that such a clever idea.

On the way back, I saw more islands we had to skip due to the strong currents.

How about a nice dinner back at the resort?

I was very happy to wake up to some bright sunlight. I knew our luck has reversed for the better.

The boat people said that, despite the better weather, the waves remained too strong for a convenient ride. They offered to take us to a different pier that would afford us a smoother boat ride to the islands.

And where we were...

...at our first short stop.

Once we were out this far, the ride became less bumpy and island hopping was quite effortless.

This one was packed with tourists.

I have never bought a coconut from a stall this exotic before. But with no coconut trees around, I would imagine that they were brought from the mainland.

Cool...

...and they cut the coconut up for us to eat the meat.

Soon enough, we were approaching our last stop and the place I wanted to see for myself the most.

Do you see an opening in the center?

See it now?

It is a lagoon inside! This island is called Koh Hong, literally, the Chamber Island, for this very reason.

And surprisingly, there was nobody around to be caught in the camera. The emerald green color of the water is surreal but not best rendered by my camera.

Water here is safe for swimming. I read that there are some fish to feed as well. And at low tide, there must be a dry area somewhere towards the right of this photograph. If the weather was agreeable, we would have been here one day earlier and had an hour to spend leisurely in this lagoon.

Unfortunately, we had a plane to catch so we must begin to head back for the trip to the resort and then to the airport.

Catching one last look

Surprise find near the lobby

Back to Bangkok and ready for the disaster that was work the following day

Thanks for looking. Can't wait to share with you guys pics from the following two trips.

A lot of things were going on my mind when I took that shot with waves crashing in. They were so strong even the locals came out to take photo like I did, saying they hadn't seen waves that strong without actual rain or storm in a big while. Next destinat...

I find the actual act of posting itself much less time-consuming than the pic selection process. It's so difficult to me to delete pics from a list, even when I know that posting too many can be boring. I do use the kind of freeware that automatically res...

What software is that?

Doh! I am damn stupid.... cen@jkt

The free one I use is called PhotoScape.

 By: Ruckdee : July 27th, 2014-02:28
You can download it here: The function we are discussing is called "Batch Editor". It's very easy to use. You will understand it right away. Just add files in the order you want them, tell the software what the final size you want the files resized to, s...

Some incredible scenery included there Ruckdee

My photos are nowhere near yours in quality and content. You know I have (too) much cameragear...but as you also know, its not the gear it depends on... So I appreciate your long quality postings! Thanks Beny

Yet another fascinating travelogue! Thanks, Ruckdee . . .

. . . wonderfully imaged and told. That lagoon seems mystical; I'd love to spend a day there. My memories of Bangkok go back almost fifty years, but every time I visit my parent's place, I'm reminded of that visit by the teak chests, artwork, and cutlery ...

Memories are such a nice thing, aren't they?

And here's the Google Maps coordinates to the lagoon. You will see it tucked in nicely in the center of the island. ,98.6774076,747m/data=!3m1!1e3 What you can't experience from the satellite and camera images is the silence. It's incredibly peaceful, whe...

A wonderful Thai journey.

Too bad the weather was so so and that you were not able to swim in the lagoon, but still the resort looked really cozy and the food tasty. Hopefully on your next trip back the weather will be better ;-) All the best and thanks for sharing, Alex

Thank you, Alex. It could have been worse. I'm grateful to get what I got.
