Apple iPhone 6 PLUS

Sep 19, 2014,13:58 PM

Happy Friday everyone!  Today's a big day for the fan boys of the iFruit...the release of the new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus!  People waited in lines for days to tried and get a hold of one.  It's the most successful launches in the company's history and should do extremely well.  If you didn't preorder it can take a while to get one.

Here's the new Apple iPhone 6 Plus in Space Grey (its also available in a Silver or Gold finish):

I got the 64GB version but it's available in 16GB and 128GB too.  IMO nowadays, 16GB is way too small.  Unlike other phones you can't use a microSD card in the iPhones so either use cloud storage or go up in memory if you have a lot of pictures, music, or video.

The biggest and most notable difference from the older gen iPhones is the screen size...4.7" and 5.5"!   People used to mock the larger screens but as more and more people use their phones to view youtube vids or watch tv and movies, they realized the advantages of a much larger screen.  The iPhone 6 comes in at: 5.44 x 2.64 x 0.27 inches (138.1 x 67 x 6.9mm) and weighs 4.55 ounces (129g).  The iPhone 6 Plus is: 6.22 x 3.06 x 0.28 inches (158.1 x 77.8 x 7.1mm) and weighs 6.07 ounces (172g).

The body design has moved away from the iPhone 5 and is styled similar to the old iPhone 3G/GS, the edges of the frame is curved.  Some will complain about it being slippery to hold but it looks sleeker.  Aluminum and glass.

WTF??? 1GB RAM?  Hope this doesn't become a problem.

The recently updated iOS8 is already loaded on the new iPhones but some of the older devices can be updated to it.

Optical stabilizer in the f/2.2 camera, larger battery, faster 64 bit A8 chip M8 processor.  You can do 1080p at 60fps, Slo-Mo at 240 fps, and timelapse.  The Focus Pixel on the sensor allows faster focusing.

One thing to note, the camera lens protrudes out a bit and is not flush with the back.  A silicon or TPU case would help protect it from scratches, cracks, or other damage.  sad

Power button on the side:

Volume rocker on the other side:

Since this the larger device, Apple came up with the new Reachability feature.  The UI allows you to do things with one hand.  Haven't had a chance to play with much yet but we'll see how well it works.

Finally a 1080p screen!  The Retina display has 401 pixels per inch with a contrast ratio (iPhone 6 -1400:1, iPhone 6 Plus - 1300:1) and brightness ratings of 500 cd/m2.  Not as nice as compared to the QHD of the LG G3 and upcoming Note4.

Another new feature is Near Field Communication (aka NFC).  Welcome to 2010, iPhone 6/6 PLUS...NFC capability!  LOL!  But WTF...it only works with the new Apple Pay.  sad

Lightning to USB charging port, speaker, and headphone jack.  You can also see the Home button/Fingerprint Touch ID scanner:

If you utilize Apple Pay, the Touch ID sensor adds another level of security when making purchases.  Much improved over the 5S but the HTC ONE M8 seems clear and louder.  Speakers are located here:

Did anyone else get or planning to get the new Apple 6 or 6 Plus?  What do you think of it so far?

-MW

Steve was right - it's too big!

This is like a 50mm watch. That\'s my first impression after 24 hours. Not too big to see, but too big for hand and too big for pocket. I found myself laying it on the table when at home, not keeping in pocket like I do my 4s which I still have and my ser...

Congrats on your 6. Do you use your iPhone much for browsing, vids, or movies? Have you noticed a difference with typing text messages or emails on the larger phones? We should do a 1 week follow up and see if you get accustomed to the larger screen. -MW

I have a big issue with I Phones: The battery autonomy.

 By: amanico : September 19th, 2014-14:35
My Nokia Lumia 920 is less perfomant than an I Phone, but in normal use, the autonomy is Superior to two days. With the I Phone, one full day is a miracle. Which cannot be good for my real job. Best, Nicolas

It's not available yet but I'm guessing they will release a Juice Pack for the new 6/6 Plus. I'm like you, I prefer a removeable battery but if you need power and insist on a iPhone or other where you can't change out your battery I would recommend someth...

Yes but looking for a plug to feed the I phone seems to be the I Phone owners fav sport.

Which bores me a lot.... My wife has one, and honestly, seeing her worrying ALL THE TIME, for the autonomy of her phone, is really tiring. Best, Nicolas

LOL! [nt]

I got the 6 Plus as a gift from a very good friend. I'm not big on iPhones so I'll probably play with it a bit and then give it away. Are you upgrading soon? -MW

I think that I would be lost if I attempted to switch from my NEXUS.

Although I still carry my iPad most of the time. Hope to see a review from you on the 6 plus. JerryW

I haven't explored all the new stuff with iOS8 but so far not that impressed. The lens sticks out and is not flush, gotta get some kind of case for it. I just played with the 6 that a friend had during dinner. She was surprised that NFC was already on pho...

Not a fan of big phones

 By: sten : September 19th, 2014-22:33
But still got the 6. Can't imagine talking on the 6 plus. Although I'm a big fan of iPhone, if the bigger phone trend continues, this will be my last iPhone. If I want a big phone, it would be carrying a Motorola brick.

When I first got the Galaxy S4 I thought it was kinda big. After a few days with it you really don't notice it. Do you do a lot of browsing or watching vids on your phone? I think how and what you use your phone for will dictate if a larger screen is the ...

"Is that your phone or are you just glad to see me?"

 By: cazalea : September 20th, 2014-16:43
I think that's the biggest problem for guys! I see phones sticking out of girls' back jeans pockets, which seems like a good way to break the screen. For me it's quite a bit larger so I notice the oddness of holding it to my face. Mike

LOL! Excellent, Mike! [nt]

Don't really watch video on my phone

 By: sten : September 25th, 2014-17:40
i have my TV for that. In general I like my TV and computers and iPad to have BIG screens. The bigger the better. But for something like a cell phone, which I carry in my pocket with me everywhere, I prefer it to be as compact as possible. My all time fav...

The Nokia 8810?

 By: DRMW : September 26th, 2014-00:01
I had one when I was with Cingular (AT&T), I recall everyone calling it the Matrix phone even thought it wasn't. Did you know it was the first cellphone without an antenna? -MW

Actually..

 By: sten : September 26th, 2014-09:34
it had internal antenna. First layer my eyes on that phone when I saw it in a Hong Kong TV series. When it first came out, I was with AirTouch. Had to switch to Cingular so I could get the phone. Been with AT&T ever since.

re: actually

 By: DRMW : September 26th, 2014-10:37
Yep, that's what I meant, the antenna was internal. I started out with L.A. Cellular (which became Cingular then At&T) back in the 90's LOL! -MW

Very nice! [nt]

No but I did give it away...

 By: DRMW : September 29th, 2014-00:00
I didn't have any bend issues but I wasn't too pleased with the 6 Plus. Yesterday I gave it away to a relative that really wanted it. So looking forward in getting the Galaxy Edge but it will be released after the Note 4. -MW
