The Great Dumpling Download PART2: Shanghailander Palace

Hello all!

Hope you are enjoying your weekend.  For me Saturday and Sunday is a great time to meet up with friends, chat, and catcha  bite to eat.  One of my favorite items are dumplings and I noticed that many here on the forum do too!  Fellow PuristS 'spellbound' did a post on homemade ones (  http://timeout.watchprosite.com/show-forumpost/fi-686/pi-6294218/ti-915218/s-0/t-timeout-dumpling-culture-around-the-world/   )

I did a Great Dumpling Download (  http://timeout.watchprosite.com/show-forumpost/fi-686/pi-5702463/ti-841623/s-0/t-timeout-the-great-dumpling-download/ ) so let's continue with a PART2 of some nice finds in the Los Angeles area!

Usually I don't hang out that far east to the city of Hacienda but some friends were raving about a place that was really popular for dumplings.

Shanghailander Palace:

This dumpling is the Shanghailander Pan Fried Buns:

Instead of a regular dough they use the type found in a steamed bao.  Their version was excellent!  The bao was light and thin with the meat filling cooked perfectly and juicy.  The bottom had a nice crispy crust to it without being burnt.  Dip it in the ginger infused black vinegar...YUM!

Next we had 'Jai' type appetizer which is Chinese for vegetarian.  It's gluten with some bean curds and shitake mushrooms served cold.  I'm not into this but it was good.

Xiao Long Bao aka Soup Dumplings is the focus here so we had to get their steam dumplings.  They offer regular pork filled or minced crab versions:

The Steamed Juicy Dumplings were great, the dough was thin and the inside was tender with the right balance of filling to wrapper.

One of their signature dishes is the Shanghai Style Chicken:

It looks kinda of bland but it had a pleasant slightly salty flavor to it.  The chicken itself was tender and the light mixed ginger and scallion soy sauce was a good accompaniment to the dish.

Next was one IMO was the best dish of the meal at Shanghailander...the Fish Filet with Seaweed:

The batter was light and very crisp, the fish was moist and absolutely delicious!  The had a dipping salt but it was great by itself.  I would drive all the way out to Hacienda Heights to eat this, it was that good.

Last but not least, Pan Fried Dumplings aka Potstickers:

Like the Xiao Long Bao, this was done correctly.  The dough had a tasty consistency to it and they fried it perfectly.

Our next stop was also in the Hacienda Heights area...New Noodle Garden: On the wall was a banner claiming to win some kind of major noodle or dumping award. The place was busy so that was a good indicator as we looked over the menu. For the hand made noo...

Went to Pine and Crane as a guest of a friend; and as you warned, it left something to be desired.

Pine & Crane is the only decent place in that area that's way it is so busy. What did you order? -MW

What was ordered: Beef roll. This had too much cucumber, and the menu didn't state the ingredients of the beef roll, so this was a surprise. I wasn't expecting cucumber to be the primary overall ingredient other than the beef. The hoisin sauce here was ni...
