The three best dishes I've had so far this year...

Oct 22, 2014,09:09 AM

Roast breast of duck at The Wing CX Emerald and First Class dining room room, Hong Kong International Airport.
Thick cut, with skin...tender, moist, Q, flavorful...transcendent.

Their menu changes and two weeks later they didn't have it anymore...

:-(

Roasted baby rack of lamb, medium rare.  The tenderness, the flavours, just the right amount of fat and the infusion of applewood smoke...absolutely sublime...
At French Window, IFC Hong Kong

prime kalbi at the original (not La Cienega!) Genwa Korean BBQ

The marinade...the quality of the beef...just spectacular.

Honorable mention goes to a...gasp!...banquet meal hosted by Mont Blanc during Watches and Wonders 2014 at the pool house dining room, Grand Hyatt Hong Kong. Every course was memorable, and could stand on its own even in a to order 3 star temple of gastronomy...

The have this crunch/snap to the hot dog casing that makes it really good. They have burgers and tamales and stuff but the dogs are the reason why they have gotten so famous. They opened in Vegas and other places in L.A> but the original on La Brea is ...

Oh man oh man

Those dawgs! You are a very lucky man. Those are almost my version of hot dog heaven. I'm a Coney Island kinda guy: dog, chili, raw chopped onions, mustard (Guldens spicy brown), pickle relish.: nothing else, no cheese, no ketchup. Side of fries, and a Dr...

 By: DRMW : October 24th, 2014-10:04
I like Nathan's, they do a good dog. Here in L.A. we have Pink's, their hot dog has a great chili that isn't greasy and just the right spices. Usually a long line all day every day but IMO worth the wait. It's been a foodie landmark around here so if you ...

 By: Esharp : October 25th, 2014-22:48
Oh yes!!! BLT Burger in Harbour City is pretty satisfying. Stepping up a notch, I have no complaints about Beef & Liberty or the Butchers Club Burgers either. Unfortunately I don't think any of them does hot dogs though. Maybe I should give up the day job...

So, let's see - burgers, chilli dogs, XLB, sweet/salty combinations for dessert, and now wings. I'm afraid you and I have pretty much exactly the same palate! (While we're at it, I have this crazy idea that a buffalo wing chain would do really well in mai...

Bone marrow!

 By: Esharp : October 25th, 2014-22:30
So I checked out their menu online and there's a whole section on bone marrow. Awesome, if artery-clogging. Could this be a replacement for St John now that I've left London? Thanks - I've been missing a sort of French grand café kinda place, a sort of HK...

Forgot to mention that at Lawry's you MUST get their Ice Cream sundae. They use CC Brown's Hot Fudge (it's old school Hollywood stuff) with warm peanuts and whip cream. Here's the half portion: :) -MW ...

Gosh, how many people does the full portion serve?

That alone makes it look worth going! Haven't had prime rib in a while. Perhaps I need to make the trip soon...

I barely finish the Lawry's cut and one side and once in a while can make room for dessert. I see a lot of people polish off an appetizer, the larger Diamond Jim Brady cut plus a lobster tail then do dessert. A good friend of mine has no problem chowing d...

I hear you: last night Mrs E and I had 6 oysters and shared a single smallish steak between the two of us for dinner, and that was plenty! I haven't been to the local Lawry's, although I did check out the menu yesterday - it didn't list desserts, nor does...

HK style steak is served on a sizzling hot plate and they douse it with a gravy/sauce on top. Boston (probably the most well known for HK-style steak), Sammy's Kitchen, Anna, Tai Ping Goon, and Goldfinch to name a few. It's more of a old school touristy t...

You make it out to L.A. and the local L.A. PuristS will take you to Genwa for Korean BBQ. Make sure you extend your stay as we'll be talking 1911's and AP's all night long. :) -MW

Those PuristS know how to party...

 By: patrick_y : October 23rd, 2014-12:58
LMK when you come down too. I'll try to partake if I can. It's only a short flight from SF to LA. Or a really long drive.

You guys are on.

 By: MichaelC : October 24th, 2014-06:42
2015, MichaelC will visit LA. The beginning of the year might be a bit busy but I will fit this trip in. Korean BBQ, 1911s, AP... I might not want to come home!

Good deal.

 By: patrick_y : October 24th, 2014-10:04
You might not want to come home. But it's okay, LA Traffic will scare you home. How's the traffic in Colorado?
