I thought that was a horrible mistake…

There are some singers who are just on another level - Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Freddie Mercury to name but three and, in my opinion, it’s a horrible mistake to cover one of their songs so close to the original. You just get nailed. The only way to pull it off is to provide a whole new take on the song and really put it into your own style. Alas, George didn’t do this.

Freddie Mercury “Somebody to Love” 10 / 10
George Michael “Somebody to Love” 3 / 10

George would have been 60 today but unfortunately he died, aged 53, on Christmas Day 2016 at his riverside home in Goring. The world lost a talented artist but the the music lives on. Did you see him perform live or have a favourite song ? ...

Freedom 90, good choice

At what point in his career did you see him live ?

No, never saw him perform, Cap . . .

. . . but when I checked for other musicians whose birthday would've been today, Radka Toneff came up. A favorite of mine . . . what a set of pipes she had. She would've been 71 had she not taken her own life forty-one years ago. 😌

Great jazz singer …

Elton played it last night at Glastonbury in tribute to George. Very moving.

"...uck! He's dead, too. At least we still have Bowie.

Yeah, we still... ... have Bowie." I miss them a lot!!!

I have a somewhat traumatic (social) experience linked to Wham’s Last Christmas.

So I will be forever scarred by GM and Wham ! And most definitely still have some PTSD when I hear that song. LOL I do love the Comic Relief piece he did with James Corden (I was a fan of the show G&S, one of the funniest shows on TV at that time). Anothe...

His participation at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert was depending on one song request from George Michael: he wanted to sing "Somebody to love."

From 3:25 onwards you can see David Bowie and Seal watching the rehearsal. Both very impressed! I have never seen him. My favourite song would be "Faith" an like Abel: "Careless whisper"! 😃

The original by Freddie Mercury is certainly the better version.

I think George Michael was very touched by the lyrics of this song. I personally like cover versions alot, like this one, first heard in the movie "The big Lebowski". There is a ver nice mood in this version.

One of my favorite songwriters and singers

I wish I had been to any of his live performances... but back in his high time I was a poor student and simply could not afford a ticket. A week ago I was on an airplane flying back home, I found and watched this documentary made in 2017 soon after his de...

No favourites, loved everything he did
