Eating Out – Venturing into the Wilds of Canton Bern

We are always looking out for new and interesting places to go out and eat well, but this time the story is complicated.  This spring we became aware of a winemaker in Canton Aargau with some excellent wines, Weinbau Hartmann in Remigen.
Of course we went there to see and taste what they have to offer.  We spent a pleasant hour in Remigen with Mme. Hartmann tasting and discussing their wines.  As Hartmann supplies wines to many Swiss restaurants we discovered that the restaurant that is the closest to us is the Restaurant Sternen in Mauss, canton Bern.  So, of course, we had a new destination.

But where is Mauss? (Mouse).  It is a little tiny village lost in the countryside near Mühleberg with access only through the typical Swiss one and a half lane country roads.  Evora is ready, let's go.
On arrival we find a typically inviting village bistro/restaurant.

As is our custom we let ourselves be convinced by the menu, to let the cook show us his best work (we hope).  The investigation of the wine list took much longer.  They have an excellent and very varied wine list.  Wines from 9 different Swiss cantons, including the wines from Hartmann in Remigen, of course.
A big choice of Spanish and Portuguese wines along with a selection of lesser-known French and Italians.  We discovered we have a similar taste in wines as we found 3 wines in the list that we have in our cellar at home.
After some discussion we decided to try out a Trais Cotschens 2011 Merlot/Cabernet Dorsa/Zweigelt from Grendelmeier Bannwart in the Bundner Herrschaft in canton Graubunden to go with the lamb of our meal.

We started out with a glass of bubbly each, a Zweigelt Frissante from the Steirmark (A) for me and a Cremant Blanc de Noir from Landeron for my wife.  For appetisers I had a parmisan flan served on a tomato concassé, my wife chose the potato-tunafish purée on a salad bed with lemon sauce.

The soup, a light salmon cream soup with dill with a puff pastry shark.

Isn't the label of this Spanish wine just wonderful?

Saddle of lamb in a dark herb sauce with ratatouille and Camargue rice.

After finishing the wine, what anguish, we move out to the terrace as the sun has moved around the corner of the building.

The desert list is written on the "Desert Mirror".  I choose a crumb cake with plums and cinnamon ice-cream, my wife the desert "Surprise".

Evora is waiting patiently across the street.

Mauss is a very quiet little village.

That fact is most certainly helped a lot by these signs prohibiting some important things that can disturb the peace.

We are getting to the end of our meal and a very pleasant afternoon.  There is just one more little decision to be made.

I can imagine that this has not been the last time that we visit the Restaurant Sternen in Mauss.

The puff pastry in the shape of a shark is a nice touch. Those verboten signs are pretty funny! -MW

Looks like a nice place to visit for a great meal. Do you have to make reservations in advance? Regards, ED-209

This one looks very nice!

I hope to have the opportunity to test it one day... Thanks Don! Fx

I am drooling insanely here. Thank you for suggestions of what I should have this weekend.

It will not be in the canton of Bern, of course, most regrettably. But I will have to suffice with something local. Thank you. Ruckdee
