My Swiss Horological Pilgrimage

May 03, 2013,04:58 AM

Visiting Switzerland had been one of my dreams for quite some time. I figured that, since I keep buying their watches, I might as well visit their country to see how things are like and how life is lived. With that thought firmly in mind, I set out to make the necessary appointments for the late March visit of myself and a few friends.

We had only eight nights to spend on Swiss ground so we had to make it count.

The Omega Constellation clocks were everywhere in the airport...

...which reminded us we had to reset our watches to local time.

As soon as we checked into our hotel in Zurich, we headed straight by train to Schaffhausen for our first destination.

A quick stroll through the town on the way to IWC

Somebody spray painted this on the foothpath...

...looking up, I saw this sign.

The building was unmistakable. We have finally arrived at IWC!

It was a shame we were not allowed to take photographs inside of their fine and compact museum.

At least I managed this one wristshot from outside the building for memory's sake

Goodbye, IWC. Until the next visit...

A visit to Schaffhausen could not have been complete without a visit to the Rhine Falls.

One last shot before returning to Zurich

Each of the following days was spent in one city across the country. We moved next to Bern.

And then to Bienne, where the Omega Museum awaited

I actually have many, many pics of the museum to share. But I think it is best for me not to show all so there will be more surprises left for you to discover on your own. Allow me to close the museum tour with these two prototypes of the X-33.

After that day, the trip took us further southwestern to the snowy Le Sentier.

A visit to Jaeger-LeCoultre completed the pilgrimage to my three all-time favorite watch brands.

Again, photography was impossible for me beyond this point. But my memory of the visit will remain with me forever.

A quick stop in Le Pont on the way back from the Grande Maison

With all watch destinations covered, it was time to fully explore the landscape of Switzerland. The next morning we were in Lausanne.

We found Lavaux to be quite sunny that afternoon.

The weather was dramatically different during our next two days in Zermatt.

Some warm food was in order to fight against the cold.

IWC Ingenieur Mission Earth in icy environment

This is the largest collection of snow-buried Omega I have seen. Only one of them is mine though.

Lucerne was where we spent the last full day of the trip.

It was very nice to have a hotel room right in front of the Chapel Bridge...

...otherwise it would not have been possible to take this wristshot!

The next morning was our last in Switzerland.

Last minute work on the train back to Zurich Airport

There were 67 gates and ours just had to be the last one down the terminal.

First glimpse of reality back home in Bangkok, Thailand

And that's it for my first trip to Switzerland and I should say Europe.

Thank you for viewing!

Thank you for this great post, Ruckdee. It looks like you had a fabulous time. I HAVE to plan a trip there myself. You have given me some god ideas. Did you make any purchases while you were there?!?!? It would be too much of a temptation for me, I fear. ...

I'm glad you find it inspiring. To answer your question...

 By: Ruckdee : May 3rd, 2013-07:58
...no, I did not buy any watch. I simply could not afford to because I had one watch on order from the SIHH 2013 and I was saving some reserves for the Basel 2013 which had yet to come at the time of my trip. I simply could not make enough money these day...

Thank you for sharing a dream trip ..

Wonderful places, watches, pictures and scenery. I memorable trip. Cheers, Nilo

Thanks for the long walk

Very nice to have a look from Paris at the place you visited . Cheers, Mark

It was indeed a long walk. We didn't take taxi even one time in Switzerland.

 By: Ruckdee : May 3rd, 2013-08:10
All trains and sometimes buses. Paris is one other city I must visit when I have the chance. I hope to make it there before I am really old. Cheers, Ruckdee

Looks like a wonderful trip

The one picture with the black glove infrnt of the case of Omega watches had me worried. I was thinking you were a part time cat burglar.... just about to create an international scene... LOL. Best Bill

Ha ha... Looking back now, you are quite right.

 By: Ruckdee : May 3rd, 2013-08:20
I chose black shirt and black gloves that day for a reason. I wanted to minimize the reflection of myself and my hands when shooting through the glass showcases. And to my surprise the trick worked wonderfully for me. Ruckdee ...

A a bit a Twilight vampire glitter you are trying to cover up. I think it was Twilight right where they glitter in the sun and burn up or something during the day. Great report thanks for taking us with you on the journey. Best Bill

A dream trip...

thank you for bringing us along, Ruckdee.

You have been to the Promised Land! :)

Thank you for this report, Ruckdee! It is always a pleasure to go there! :) Hope you had time to see a lot - the place(s) are so big you need several days at each place to really take in all... Best Blomman

Time was my main enemy. I wish I could spend three days in each city...

 By: Ruckdee : May 3rd, 2013-19:28
...or to spend only one day like this but extend the trip to cover the southeastern corner of the country. But to do that, my clients would not be waiting for me when I come back home. I will have no future! So, perhaps, next time :D Ruckdee

Cool trip!

The Museum Director I met is a great character.

I have the next best things though, especially for you! These were from a different building from the museum, though. I swear I did not break this one. It came in pieces like this. I swear. No after school detention please, teacher ;) I hope you find that...

Hi Ruckdee, it was a nice surprise to read your report and to learn that you have come so close to my home - only 300 km more by plane! Obviously your trip has been some weeks earlier judging from the peopleĀ“s clothes and the snow. I shortly visited Switz...

Even I myself was surprised I could manage to go on this trip.

And, yes, it will be great to catch up again in Europe when there is a chance. I surely will let you know beforehand if there is such an opportunity. By the way, this trip was made in the last week of March. We expected snow but not this much. People told...

Great fun!

Who did you go with? Is your wife taking most of the photos? Absolutely amazing trip! Reminds me of the trip I took in Switzerland when I was very young.

I went there with my fiancee and ten friends of mine.

 By: Ruckdee : May 4th, 2013-20:20
Actually I should say seven friends and three spouses of theirs. I was very glad the ladies were not all bored to death by the watch parts of the trip. I took all pics you saw, except for two where my right hand was in the frame. I am glad to hear my post...

Great fun with friends...

 By: patrick_y : May 5th, 2013-11:58
Great job and congrats! Thanks for the photo documentation!

Lucky you!

Indeed a Purists dream trip. Thanks for sharing.

Reading all the kind comments, I can't help but become more convinced...

 By: Ruckdee : May 6th, 2013-00:30
...that I made all the right choices going on this trip. The credit card bill was horrible, as you can imagine, for someone of limited financial means like myself. But the dream trip was worth it. Thank you for giving me this conviction. Ruckdee

Some truly amazing pictures

I know how much you were looking forward to doing this, and as such, I am extremely happy for you! It appears to have been a little bit too cold, but I am sure due to the excitement of the visit, you barely noticed it! Thanks for sharing, and I guess now ...

You really know and, yes, thank you for sharing my joy.

It was a bit cold. It was the first time I was in subzero climate. But the fatty layers I carry around 24/7 proved to be EXTREMELY helpful! Ruckdee (with his trips mapped out from now until May 2014)
