A little breakfast treasure I discovered in Rome
Feb 26, 2015,02:46 AM
So this will be a quick post as I don't have much time today,
But before it gets too late in the morning, I'd like to share
something I've discovered here in Rome.
It's called a 'Sfogliatella Napoletana':
Let me describe it: On the outside it reminds me of a lobster tail or something - for some reason its shape makes me associate it with seafood!
it is a hard shell made of hundreds of crisp hard folds of paper thin dough. when you pick it up, it is heavy and makes you think that this will be a rock !
As you can see, it's got a design appeal
Here's the top view: ahh yes, and it can come with powdered sugar (don't pay attention to the SUPER good coffee's that are in the picture, that's for another day
Here is the Underside. Wow, cruuuuchy!
Nice profile shot, I should have put it on my wrist!!
But here is the main surprise!!!
When you bit into it, you pierce into a hollow space full of the best consistence custard filling!
The filling is of course at room temperature and thick with sugar... it is the contrast
between this smooth creamy sweet filling with the outside crunchy shell that makes
the eating of one of these things an amazing experience!!!
And yes.. here's a mandatory shot... since we are here at the Purists!!!
Next time you're in Rome, you HAVE to look out for one of these breakfast pastries!!
Hope you're all having a good week
