Holiday weekend roadtrip

Sep 02, 2014,21:51 PM

The weather here in SoCal was wonderful for the Labor Day holiday weekend.  Friday noon at the office and I look out to Santa Monica beach and see large waves and blue skies.

Not sure why but we got a craving for fried chicken.  Traffic was relatively light so we drove down to Knott's Berry Farm for a quick visit to Mrs. Knott's Chicken Dinner Restaurant.  It's located near the entrance to the theme park.

It's been several years since I've been here and everything still looks the same.  There was a large crowd but luckily we only had to wait about 10 minutes to get a table.

It's been hot here so we started with a tall glass of ice cold boysenberry punch.

The chicken dinner includes a salad and a cup of creamy chicken noodle soup.

Fresh, hot and flaky buttermilk biscuits were brought to the table.  We got a scoop of boysenberry butter to go with the biscuits.

And finally we got a plate of the famous fried chicken with mash potatoes and white gravy and a side of buttered corn.  The chicken was fantastic, the chicken was flavorful and moist, with the exterior slightly crunchy.  Definitely worth the drive down to Knott's and just as good as I remembered.

The dinner came with dessert so we got a slice of boysenberry pie.

Then mid-day Saturday we took a easy drive out to Las Vegas.  It was nearly 100 degrees and bright and sunny outside.  But still there was plenty of tourists walking along the strip.

We skipped lunch because we were anxiously awaiting for our dinner reservations at Brand Steakhouse in the Monte Carlo restaurant.

Hot skillet baked bread and sweet butter while we waited for our main course.

Awesome, the 24 ounce Tomakawk bone-in ribeye steak cooked medium rare.

And we added a Maine lobster tail with seafood stuffing.

Our very own surf and turf! smile

After dinner we wandered around the newly rennovated SLS Hotel on the north side of the Vegas strip.  The casino was decked all out in a monkey theme...

Sunday brunch was at Jasmine Restaurant in the Bellagio.  Lots of fresh seafood like chilled king crab, poached shrimp, mussels, oysters and tuna.

Since Jasmine is a Chinese restaurant, we had some dim sum offerings like har gao and sui mai, along with peking duck, lobster eggs benedict, and housemade applewood sausage.

Lobster pot pie, this was excellent and had generous chunks of lobster.

There was a noodle bar where a cook was there to make a custom bowl of noodles.  I had one made with fish balls, fish cake and egg noodles with some spinach and bean spouts.

Getting full, but had to sample some desserts.  Mixed berry gelato, a berry compote, chocolate cream puff and fruit tart.

We were so full from lunch that we ended up skipping dinner on Sunday night.

Then we woke up early on Monday morning to drive back to LA and beat the traffic from the typical long weekend drive.  We made it in good time back in LA and stopped by another favorite place, Pink's hot dog for lunch.

Classic chilli dogs with grilled onions.  We added a side of fried onion rings and side of bacon.  Delicious!

Hope everyone enjoyed their weekend.

The fried chicken at Knott's was always good, glad to hear that it still is. Doc Brown's at Universal Studio's is supposed to close (or already has). How was the Monkey Bar? -MW

Nothing worth seeing at SLS

Sad to report that the new SLS is not really worth visiting. Nothing really good to see or do, it actually feels kinda run down even though it was rennovated. Parking garage elevators weren't working, carpeting in the casino area looks worn and dirty. Plu...

that's sad to hear...

The SLS has been hyped to bring a unique experience in Vegas. It sounds that they have a lot of work to do. Thanks for the input ED-209. -MW

When you said "roadtrip", I wasn't prepared for this many food shots.
