London Bridge Lake Havasu, Arizona

Since it's Spring Break for many people, we head out towards a popular spot in Lake Havasu City, Arizona ...

A video tour of London Bridge:

The London Bridge was built in 1831 and later sold to the founder of Lake Havasu City, Robert McCulloch.  He was developing a community and wanted a landmark or tourist attraction and his business associate informed him that the bridge was for up for sale.

It's a popular destination as Laughlin is alternative to Las Vegas.  People from California, Arizona, and Nevada frequent here for vacation and events.

The statue on front of the entrance to Lodnon Bridge:

There is a walking path (Zenger Trail) around the area.  You can visit the shops or just hangout at the waterfront.

boat tours are offered daily...

I guess this is a good idea to have, you can't call Triple A for your boat!

The weather this day was nice and sunny.  During the summer this place can get insanely hot!  Fortunately for us it was really nice.  People were out and about and it seemed like everyone was having a good time.

It was quiet at the ends of the Bridgewater Channel but directly under the London Bridge, lots of action going on...let's check it out!

A live performance!  They sounded pretty good and placed some popular songs.  Next to it was a big barbecue setup and it smelled really good.  We ate an hour earlier so we didn't sample any food here.  Guess I need to revisit and try something.

The London Bridge relocation was a logistical challenge and had to be taken apart into several pieces and rebuilt.   It was shipped to the Port of Houston and then from there transported to Lake Havasu City.  In 1988, all the pieces arrived and it took three years to complete.  Once everything was done, they created the Bridgewater Channel which allowed water to flow from the Colorado river.

There was a nice breeze coming through the underpass so it was a great spot to snap some pics of the bridge:

If I had more time I would have liked to rent a paddle boat and do a ride up and down the Channel.

There are several ways to get to the London Bridge, let's take a look at the view when on it:

The bridge stretches almost 1,000 feet and has 2 lanes for vehicles.  The side walks for the pedestrians are wide and you can take a lot of photos from here.

You can see the stores and restaurants at the bottom:

and some of the boats docked at the slips:

A cool place to hang out or take a leisurely boat ride!

It can get windy up here so if you are wearing a hat watch out.  I say several people chasing their's when a big gust blew by!

It was surprisingly quiet on the channel but during Spring Break, it gets pretty busy around here.

At the end of one part of the London Bridge leading towards the visitor's parking area is a statue of Robert McCollugh with the planner,  C. Wood

Of course it's easy to recognize the U.S. and British flag, the one on the right is the State flag of Arizona:

Hope you enjoyed this tour!  For those of you on vacation, have fun and be safe!

Brings back memories of college days when we used to do spring break in Lake Havasu. It got really crowded with lots of boats and drunk people. But was a lot of fun. Regards, ED-209

It can get crazy there...

The original concept was to bring a landmark to attract tourists and to build up a community. McCollough's vision was to create a retirement community as there was nothing out there at the time. Today it's a popular spot to check out as Laughlin is just n...
