Surefire X400 Ultra - Green and Red

Hello all,

As you all probably know, I'm a huge fan of Surefire products.  I recently posted about my new light the E1D LED Defender( http://timeout.watchprosite.com/show-forumpost/fi-686/pi-6652273/ti-957698/s-0/t-timeout-surefire-e1d-defender/ ) but this time we'll take a look at another one of their fine products:

The Surefire X400 Ultra line of WML's (Weapons Mounted Lights):

The X400 is Surefire's newest and brightest LED light and laser combo.  You can choose the X400 Ultra-RD or the X400 Ultra-GN, a visible red or green laser:

The green laser has higher visibility than the red, both in the 5 milliwatt range.  The white light shines a super bright 500 lumens with a runtime of 1.5 hours.  The compact 3.6 inch body housing is a durable black aluminum material and weighs only 4.9 ounces.  The bezel itself comes in at 1.125 inches.  Attachment to various rails is with the cross slot screw that will work on picatinney/weaver style systems.  On my old Streamlight/insight M6/M6X they have a quick release lever bar that mounted securely and detached quickly, it was a faster and easier.  The biggest disadvantage of the M6/M6X is the mostly plastic construction.  The Surefire X300/X400 being metal feels much more solid and bullet proof.

The laser adjustment can be dialed in by the ports on the side of the housing. A hex head (provided in the set) moves the elevation and windage so you get perfect alignment.  They use a Nylok material so it can withstand the intense recoil that the light is exposed to.

The Surefire has a coated tempered pre-focused lens. The lasers are not eye safe so be careful when you aim the beam!

The bottom of the housing has a 4 position switch:  Off, laser only, light only, and both laser and light.  On the rear contains the click/pressure lever to activate the weapons light.  If you press it in you get a momentary on, if you push the lever down and click it into the place it activates the constant on feature.  Both switches are ambidextrous.

Mounting the Surefire X400 is with a slotted screw, the edge has a knurled surface so you can install or remove it with gloves on.

The controls are very intuitive.  The design works extremely well on a handgun and when mounted on a carbine/rifle quad rail it was just as easy to use.

The tail cap is like the older Surefire Weapon Mounted Lights and uses the CR123A's.  If you use this on a AR type firearms, you probably have extra batteries in your grip.  My LMT SOPMODs have battery compartments so carrying one type of battery for both my red dot sight (EOtech) and Surefire X400 is very convenient.  The 0-ring design provides a water proof to keep your light functioning in the worst wet environments.

Surefire also offers a optional grip switch for handguns and a tape switch for long guns.

A pic of the Surefire Rail-Lock mounting system:

They provide extra parts to work with non standard rails (Glock).  The piece is a bit wider than the picatinney one:

I've mounted the X400 Ultra-GN on a Springfield Operator and put about 2,000 rounds on it.  On a AR15 pistol, the Surefire soaked up about 5,000 rounds.  It held up without any problems and kept it's zero!  Like all my other Surefires, it worked perfectly.  The only negative I can think of is the price, the Green variant is even higher than the Red.  But if you are looking for a reliable and durable light/laser combo that you can trust, this is the one for you.

Happy shooting!

Nice review. I'm a fan of Surefire products too and have the X400U and X300U. I haven't tried the green laser version because I thought the price differential was not worth the brightness gain. The red laser is plenty bright for me even in daylight outdoo...

Good point...

I swap between my handgun and AR so I usually change batteries with it off so I haven't noticed this, thanks for letting me know. I am about to order some rechargeable Surefire A123's and see how well they work in the WML's and regular flashlights. -MW
