Flew from Munich to JFK New York a few months ago on Lufthansa. Appetizers were good. Service was excellent (I was the only person in the ticketed cabin). Like you, the food went from good appetizers to lousy mains. The wines were decent though.
But the food was very mediocre, we have a chain of comfort food in America called "Olive Garden" which is good, but never great. When I eat on a plane, I'm happy when it's equivalent to The Olive Garden. We have another sandwich chain called "Panera Bread." Why can't airlines use them to cater the food?
The best stuff is the appetizers. Chicken, then tomato salad

The lychees (canned) here were pretty bad, but I did get my fruit from the rasberries which were good. This dish was very odd, most airplane food is not very exotic, the lychees here are exotic. Plus the lychees here were having some sort of chemical reaction with the red sauce (note the discoloration).
