Guano Point: Photos and Video (PART1)

Jul 25, 2013,00:00 AM

The Grand Canyon West: Guano Point, Mohave County.

In this set of photos and video, we are about a mile or tw out from Hualapai Ranch ( timeout.watchprosite.com ) at Guano Point, Grand Canyon West.  As the sun slowly sets the rocks change in color.  What starts off as light brown and greys turn into beautiful shades of red:

From here we end our day with this stunning sunset:

Not sure if this sign was a trick, you really can't walk down to the bottom of the canyon to the Colorado River.  Accessibility is only by helicopter!

Some Panorama Shots:

Looking out east of the Canyon, this is what it looks like at 4:30pm...

and as the sun starts setting, the colors begin to change.  The Canyon at 6:45pm...

The hike around Guano Point is pretty mild.  The outer edge is a pathway but you must take caution, there aren't any guardrails to prevent you from going over the edge!  From where I shot my pictures, it's a long long way down!

I found this building interesting and posted about a few days ago, it's right up to the edge of the cliff!

So why is place called Guano Point?  Well way back when, this area was a hotspot to collect guano aka bat droppings!  Guano is nitrogen rich so it acts as a natural fertilizer

When the bat cave mine was discovered in 1936, experts at the time estimated that there was a huge deposit of guano.  For 2 years, a mining company built this elaborate cable setup (seeen below) to extract all the guano.  Unfortunately it yielded significantly less than what they thought was there and in 1960 it was shut down.

You can walk inside the building and look over the edge!

Below is the Colorado River:

When you are at the Grand Canyon West, you can only arrive at Guano Point and Eagle Point by Hualapai Shuttle buses or tours with special access ( Hualapai Ranch overnight visitors). The areas are normally closed at 7 and the park rangers begin clearing G...

it's interesting, if you did bot point out that these pictures were taken in the evening, I would have thought you were there in the morning. (Something about a cleaner, whiter light in the pictures) Looking forward to the next installment.

Glad you like the views, always appreciate you looking! The most common way to visit Grand Canyon West is via tour bus, helicopter, or plane from Vegas. From L.A. it's primarily by tour bus. The only way to get the sunrise and sunset views is to stay over...

WOW...

Yep, it's poop! Specifically bat droppings to be used as fertilizer. They thought there was a huge amount of it so they spent all this time and money to retrieve it only to find out that there wasn't all that much so they had to close the mine. -MW

It's my first set of panoramas and I have one more to show. The depth of the Grand Canyon West is impressive and it stretches put further than the eye can see. Speaking of imagining what it would be like standing there, my next set of pics are from Eagle ...

Fortunately for our noses there's no guano left at Guano Point! :) If you head out this way, Grand Canyon West is easiest and closest trip to make from Las Vegas. If you go to North Rim you can hit Zion and Bryce Canyon. South Rim is much further but IMO ...
