Guano Point (PART2)

Jul 25, 2013,00:02 AM

When you are at the Grand Canyon West, you can only arrive at Guano Point and Eagle Point by Hualapai Shuttle buses or tours with special access ( Hualapai Ranch overnight visitors).  The areas are normally closed at 7 and the park rangers begin clearing Guano Point around 6-6:30 so if you are not part of the special access group you can not stay to view the sunset.

The Grand Canyon is approximately 277 miles long with the Hualapa Nation owning over 100 miles of it.  The Reservation sits on 1 million acres of land!

Views from various areas of Guano Point:

There are two hills that you can climb or if you want to take a leisurely stroll you can walk along the lower paths.  Past the Guano Point Mine is the Highpoint hike.  From there you can see a 360 degree view of the Grand Canyon West.  It's not a difficult climb but it's definitely worth it to go up there.

There are several places you can stop to rest or take in a nice lunch with spectacular views all around:

Some people got really close to the edge, everyone warns you to be careful the drop is 2-4,000 feet!  Yikes!

Out here in Mohave County, you see a lot of these tall slender cactus type plants:

Highpoint Hike:

A scenic view everywhere you look!

I wouldn't mind coming out here when it snows, I bet the picture taking opportunities would be pretty cool.

Next up:  Eagle Point!

it's interesting, if you did bot point out that these pictures were taken in the evening, I would have thought you were there in the morning. (Something about a cleaner, whiter light in the pictures) Looking forward to the next installment.

Glad you like the views, always appreciate you looking! The most common way to visit Grand Canyon West is via tour bus, helicopter, or plane from Vegas. From L.A. it's primarily by tour bus. The only way to get the sunrise and sunset views is to stay over...

haven't been in like forever..made one trip in high school and another over it during a drunken bachelor party weekend.. need to go again...you don't understand the majestic nature of it unless you see it standing at the rim... great photos...

Grandiose! But tell me one thing, please. Why is it called Guano?

Yep, it's poop! Specifically bat droppings to be used as fertilizer. They thought there was a huge amount of it so they spent all this time and money to retrieve it only to find out that there wasn't all that much so they had to close the mine. -MW

It's my first set of panoramas and I have one more to show. The depth of the Grand Canyon West is impressive and it stretches put further than the eye can see. Speaking of imagining what it would be like standing there, my next set of pics are from Eagle ...

Fortunately for our noses there's no guano left at Guano Point! :) If you head out this way, Grand Canyon West is easiest and closest trip to make from Las Vegas. If you go to North Rim you can hit Zion and Bryce Canyon. South Rim is much further but IMO ...
