It's been a while...Philippe's The Original!

Hello all,

Hope you enjoy me sharing a bit of Los Angeles with everyone here on the forum...

Out here there are a few landmark restaurants in L.A. so when I was in downtown I stopped by a place I haven't been to in a very long time.  Philippe's is in old Chinatown near the 101 and 110 freeway.  It's next to CBS Seafood, a Chinese restaurant that has great dim sum for lunch and lots of tasty items for dinner.

What's the big deal about Philippe's?  They are well known as the place that invented the French Dip sandwich!   The store goes that in 1918, owner Philippe Mathieu dropped a French Roll accidentally into the pan filled with the meat drippings, the customer said he would take it anyway.  The customer enjoyed it so much that he returned and asked for the dipped sandwich thus the French Dip sandwich was born!

As I walked in (they've been at this location since 1951) is still packed with customers!  Got it to go and couldn't wait to dig in...

Their hot mustard is also popular and goes great on the sandwich!

You can get beef, pork, lamb, turkey, or ham but it's all about the Beef Dip!!!

They dip the bread into the Au Jus (single dip, double dip, or wet) and then pile on the beef:

YUM!!! Only bad thing is that I forgot to ask for it to be double dip but it was still delicious.  Bon apetit everyone!

I haven't been to Philippe's in a long time and fortunately it was as good as I remembered it. It's also a spot that's a favorite to go to when attending a baseball, basketball, or hockey game as Dodger stadium and the Staples Center is nearby. Do you hav...

Do they offer a medium rare version? Every French Dip I have ever had was alway well done and I much prefer rare - medium rare. JerryW

Hi, Jerry, i'm 100% with you on that one, sliced thicker than most places usually do. philippe's is ok, but for me, it's more about the legend and shabby chic ambience than about the food. i'm drawing a complete blank where's better, the way we like it, t...

I always go to Würstkuche and The Pie Hole when I am in downtown LA. Now I'll try Philippe's as I do enjoy French Dip sandwiches.
