The Dodgers were a passion . . .

. . . for decades, Ed.  I must've been to a few hundred games back in the '70s and '80s when they were one of the better teams ever put together, with players remaining on the roster for years, and in many cases, their entire careers.  Garvey, Lopes, Russell, and Cey - the infield that lasted longer than most cars, some nine years altogether.  Steve Yeager, one of the savviest catchers and easily one of the best at throwing out runners to second.  Mike Scioscia, who took hits blocking the plate . . .

. . . like no player before, or since.

Outfielders like Reggie Smith, who threw out a runner at home plate with one bounce at a game I attended; I remember the play vividly, but nothing else about the game, not even who they were playing.  Utility players, none better than Manny Mota; I saw him tie the record for pinch hits against the Astros.

And the pitchers.  Orel Hershiser, Jerry Reuss, Don Sutton.  I saw Bob Welch's* near-perfect game against Atlanta, when he gave up a single to Larvell Blanks but faced the minimum 27 batters; Blanks was erased on the next at-bat with a double-play.  Fernando: I was at that magical outing in early '81, when he blanked the Giants during a run where he went 8 and 0 with five shutouts.

I was at the first play-off game against the Mets in '88, where Hershiser continued his run of 56 shut-out innings into the seventh.  They lost that game, but went on to win the series, which set up a collision course with baseball history.

If you had to pick one play in any sport that had the greatest impact on a championship series, this would have to be at the top of the list.

Then, life happened, and my interest faded away.  I've been to a few games since their heyday in '88, but the passion isn't there anymore.  These days, I derive more pleasure from listening to Vinnie call a game than from the game itself.

Maybe it's time to go back and revive the devotion I once had.

* Welch passed away from an unknown cause a few weeks ago.

It's the beginning of Summer and what better way to start than a special company party at Dodger Stadium. The Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team was away for games in San Diego, so we had the stadium all to ourselves. Weather was perfect here in SoCal as w...

Cool yu got to go on the field and tour the stadium. The new food items look good. That grilled corn with the lime and cheese is a L.A. street food favorite! Those wooden spoons for the malts always broke when I tried scooping it. :( -MW

It was an awesome experience

Thanks Art, I agree with your comments and feel the same way. I used to be an avid fan of the Dodgers and grew up watching the same players as you: Garvey, Cey, Lopes, Scioscia, and do you remember Dusty Baker, Rick Monday, and Pedro Guerrero in the outfi...

So many memories, Ed. Maybe the best . . .

. . . was the unbelievable 10 1/2 game deficit they erased in ten days during the '82 season. They were 10 and a half games out of first place to the Atlanta Braves on a Thursday; over the next ten days, they played eight with the Braves, and won every ga...

those were the good 'ol days of Dodger Blue.

Kershaw had a no hitter a few days ago but Krienke didn't do well against the Royals yesterday. Hope they do better tonight. -MW

Lucky you!
