Immediately dropped plans to hang out with Maggie and the gang in Seal Beach so that I could pick up the latest addition to my growing collection of Denali cues. This one has a forearm of solid Brazilian kingwood.
What makes this cue special on a purely personal level is the wood used for the handle (also known as the 'wrap').
That's from a Moorpark apricot log, culled at the family orchards. In years past, I've had fruit from this tree; now, I'm playing pool with it. How cool is that?
Those spots and divots were formed by worms and termites. After sawing the stump into square dowels, the critters were eliminated after a few hours of baking in an oven (!). The dowels were then allowed to cure for a year, and the holes sealed with epoxy. Wood patina, I call it. The shaft is purpleheart, fitted with a very soft tip.
The butt is also Brazilian kingwood . . .
. . . while the trim rings, joints, and butt cap are made of buffalo horn, a first in my collection. I like the look of this cue . . .
. . . and even more, how it plays.
