The problem with getting old, is you start telling jokes the younger generations don't get......

So, I'm in the deli of my local grocery store buying some sausages, and the very nice young Gen Z serving me has the nametag "Eric B". And I couldn't help myself, I COULDN'T HELP MYSELF, I had to ask him "How's Rakim?". And, of course, he just looked at me and said he didn't know anyone named Rakim. And that's the problem with getting old, you start making killer jokes the youngsters just don't understand.

For those in the States, you've probably seen the TV ads with Dr. Rick helping those who are starting to turn into their parents. That's me. I've found I've started to laugh less and identify more with these ads. Pretty soon I'll be facing the wrong way in escalators talking to the out-of-towners; and buying brightly colored old-people pants that go up to my tits. It's such an insidious slope - from rolling your eyes at dad jokes, to laughing at them, to telling them.

Please tell me I'm not alone.

My employee walked up to me yesterday and opened up the box full of cannoli. "Would you like one"? I instinctively quipped back: "But do I have to leave the gun though?" An eerie silence and awkward looks ensued as if I were from another planet...

There's a larger message in that story, methinks. Humor in general . . .

. . . has been diluted in recent years. The arguably funniest film of all time is Blazing Saddles. It couldn't be made today. 😐

Agreed there.

The bagger at our local Trader Joe's responded to a one-liner of mine . . .

. . . with an affected, "Well." I replied, "Channeling . . . . . . Jack Benny?" "Jack who?"

Okay, my first television had tubes in it and a timer switch to not burn out the tubes. Even I barely remember Jack Benny.

Generational illiteracy gets worse. Some fifteen years ago, one of my co-workers . . .

. . . said, "Paul who?", in response to a comment I made about Paul Newman. And Paul was still alive at the time.

How much we lose with the passing of each generation.

I was listening to music at a party with a friend who is 20 years younger. I told him the vocalist on the track that was playing reminded me of Mick Jagger. He asked “who’s that ?”

That would make you . . .

. . . 29.

These friends have totally different music tastes.

But if you like to listen to any modern-day rap or hip-hop, all the artists today owe a debt of gratitude to the artists of the eighties who founded this genre of music. And one of the earliest and most influential duos were Eric B & Rakim.

Rakim 🤣
