I don't have enough experience with luxury goods to offer an informed opinion. I live in a backwater, and therefore can only see such items when I"m traveling. More and more we are confronted with all these branded items that are more often than not made outside of Europe. And the branded items that are made in Europe are not exactly sold with discretion. Quite the opposite. Often in your face. You find the same stores in London Paris NY and LA. It reminds me a bit of Disneyland, Disneyworld and Eurodisney. I would much prefer to discover the NY only, Paris only and London only labels and stores
As some have said out here, the marketing is paying off, and these are some very successful companies, so I don't believe they'll be stopping.
One question I have: can we count on some increase in quality if a shoe, a shirt, or a jacket's been made in Italy vs China or Cambodia? I used to naively believe yes, and it is what I'd like to think, but now I don't really know. Maybe there are companies that can crank out junk, market that it's made in Europe, and sell it at a premium. However, I do have some clothes from Italy which all have something amazing about them. A subtlety in the cut, the fabrics, and the sewing. I love to wear these clothes more than any others.
And then I've had occasion to see women's Fendi done with fur and leather. I thought it was absolutely amazing. I wonder, is that the quality small_luxury had in mind?
As far as shoes, I wouldn't know where to start. I guess my ideal would be to have a trusted maker build a last that matched my foot, and make the shoes from that. There is no such person in my town. I've found that many shoes that look great just don't fit my feet. So I have very limited options here, unless I move to the big city.
For me one luxury item I dream about is custom eyeglass frames from Maison Bonnet. Not prohibitively expensive, but you need to make 3 visits to their place in Paris - a selection and measurement. Initial fitting and final fitting. I've spent some time on their website.
