Canary Hotel Santa Barbara
Jul 16, 2014,00:01 AM
Santa Barbara is a nice getaway from Los Angeles. It's about 95 miles but the drive up the 101 freeway is always pleasant. For this trip we stayed at the Canary Hotel which is part of the Kimpton group of boutique hotels. It's conveniently located off the freeway and just a block south of the main street called State Street. There's a bunch of restaurants nearby and a supermarket across the street. You enter from Carillo Street via the valet parking entrance.
Some pics of the Spanish Colonial hotel exterior architecture:
The Canary is valet only so if you are like me I usually like to do self park. We drove the SUV so instead of parking at the mall structure next door, I did the valet. They were extremely friendly, courteous, and very professional. Front desk/check in personnel was just as great. Check in time is at 4pm but we notified them of our early morning arrival and the room was ready for us.
Up to the 5th floor!
The closet had a yoga mat! Turn on the tv and look for the yoga channel and you can do your poses in your room.

A souvenir froggy to take home!
Chairs were very comfortable. The bed was too but it was a bit high. Linens were a nice high thread count and they provided a variety of pillows. If you are a Kimpton member you can log into your account and keep a profile of your preferences. Bonus is that as a member, you get free wifi and $10 credit with the mini bar! Hard wood floors was a nice touch..
All rooms are non smoking and what is unique to the Canary hotel is that it is pet friendly.
Our room had a balcony that overlooked the corner of Carillo and Chapala.
Let's take a look at the balcony:
A nice breeze out here!

It's the Canary hotel so I guess that it explains the bird theme!
One of the things that the Canary hotel is known for is the rooftop area. They have 2 levels, the lower and upper deck. The lower is a patio area that they use for events and when not in use, it is a nice place to hang out for drinks. The upper deck is the pool and hot tub area with a bunch of lounge chairs. From the roof deck, it's a 360 degree view of Santa Barbara:
We left the hotel to grab a delicious dinner at State and Fig, when we got back, they sent up some complimentary fresh fruit and drinks:
A Moscow Mule! YUM!
