Wow! Nice!

I remember those Santa Barbara days back in my undergrad years.

I went to school in Los Angeles (Orange County to be exact) and visited an old grade-school friend who went to school at Santa Barbara.  Spend the afternoon on State Street, sampling food and ice cream (although not the ice cream shop you reviewed).  Would have a late lunch at this extremely authentic Mexican restaurant that Dr.No knows about, and an even later dinner in Isla Vista (we were both students at the time) at a salad cafe called "Silvergreens."

As a student, I didn't stay at the Four-Seasons on the beach or at the nice Canary hotel, I'd bring a sleeping bag, sleep on my friend's sofa and then in the wee hours of the morning take a 40 minute drive along the foggy California coast to Solvang, a small down that is known as "a slice of Denmark."

We would have a tremendous breakfast at Paula's Pancake house, and a tremendous brunch at another Solvang establishment, and then waddle back to the car like force-fed geese to drive back down to Santa Barbara.  where we'd have another late lunch in Isla Vista before I returned to Los Angeles.  Oh, those were the days.

Life was good.  Simple.  Yet immensely enjoyable.  Almost innocent, the biggest crime was only the occasional gluttony.  And sadly, I haven't been back to Santa Barbara since.  I certainly remember it and miss it.  I even remember that my friend had an apartment with valuable parking, but didn't keep a car.  But the driveway was shaped in a way that he was concerned my car would run aground.  He arranged to have the car parked at a parking lot at UC Santa Barbara, which was a two minute walk from his apartment.

Thank you for the memories DRMW.  I haven't visited Santa Barbara for over five years.  Now I know where to go and where to stay when I get back!

Canary Hotel Santa Barbara

 By: DRMW : July 16th, 2014-00:01
Santa Barbara is a nice getaway from Los Angeles. It's about 95 miles but the drive up the 101 freeway is always pleasant. For this trip we stayed at the Canary Hotel which is part of the Kimpton group of boutique hotels. It's conveniently located off the...

Jeannine's Bakery and Restaurant

Since we arrived early to Santa Barbara, we had breakfast at Jeanninie's Bakery and Restaurant. The place is located just south of the amazing State & Fig on Figueroa Street. The coffee was good but the best things on the menu are the buttermilk panca...

A fellow PuristS foodie who frequented Santa Barbara highly recommended a restaurant nearby the Canary called State & Fig. We started with a Fig Toast: Grilled crostoni, ricotta, fig jam, arugula, lemon EVOO Some champagne to start! Delicious! Clam Ch...

Persona Pizza

For a quick lunch, we went to the Persona Pizza place which is about a block away on State Street from the Canary Hotel. T Woodfired goodness! The concept is similar to a place we went to in L.A. ( ) where you build your fresh and hot pizza. Pepperoni, s...

We really enjoyed our dining experience at State & Fig and was about to go there again but we decided on trying something else. They have a Hungry Cat and Bouchon out here in Santa Barbara so we passed on them. We walked by a restaurant called Chase B...

McConnell's Fine Ice Creams

 By: DRMW : July 16th, 2014-00:09
It isn't a trip to Santa Barbara unless you have ice cream at McConnel's! They have a location on State Street but IMO the one on Mission is much better. Both places usually have long lines: There's a reason they have long lines, their ice cream is absolu...

SB is a nice place for a weekend visit. One of the fun things I like to do is the Segway tours around town. It's about 2 hours and you ride along the State St, Cabrillo Blvd, UCSB, and various parks. Regards, ED-209 ps - the Bouchon in SB is not related t...

I wanted to try the pastrami place that is a block away that is supposed to be really good. Is Bouchon in SB better than the one here? -MW
